If you’ve been involved in a collision, it’s important to act carefully and systematically. Here’s what to do step by step.

1. Safety first
- Make sure you and others are safe — do not move injured people.
- Call 112 if there are injuries or significant damage.
- Do not leave the scene without exchanging details.
2. Secure the vehicles
- Move vehicles to a safe location and place a warning triangle.
- If traffic isn’t blocked, leave the vehicles as they are.
- If they do block traffic, take photos first before moving them.
3. Collect evidence
- Write down witness details (name, address, phone number).
- Take photos of skid marks, debris, and all visible damage.
- Ask the police for the report number (proces-verbaal).
4. Report the damage digitally
- Enter all vehicle, damage, and injury details.
- Verify and submit the report with the SMS confirmation code.
Or use the European Accident Statement:
- Fill out the front side together — make sure all details are correct.
- Record witness information and mark boxes under question 12.
- Both parties must sign; complete the back section later at home.
5. Call the police if
- There are injuries, major damage, or a foreign vehicle involved.
- The other party drove away, or a crime occurred (alcohol, no license, no insurance).
6. Avoid problems
- Do not argue about who’s at fault.
- Do not agree to any direct settlement at the scene.
- If your car is not drivable, contact the emergency service (details on your green card).
7. Collision on the highway
- Get yourself and others to safety — stand behind the guardrail.
- Minor damage only? Drive to the nearest parking area or petrol station and fill in the accident form there.
8. After the accident
- If you filed online or mobile, no further action is needed.
- If you used the European form, inform your insurer within 24 hours.
- Medical check-up: Visit your GP immediately, even if symptoms seem minor. This is vital for both your health and proving your injuries were caused by the accident.
- Track all costs: Keep receipts for medical care, transport, and repairs — they are essential for compensation.
- Claim your damages: Contact Kracht! Letselschade for expert help with liability assessment and securing fair compensation — even if you already have legal expenses insurance.
